Sunrise near Green Sands beach on the south-east side of the Big Island. I was camping and got up early to get some shots as the sun rose over the trade wind-whipped Pacific. The waves were crashing onto the lava bench and the wind was blowing about 30 knots so it was hard to keep the lens clear of salt spray. Luckily it was a cheap lens and suffered no real damage!
The sky had been clearing all day as a storm front passed to the east. I knew the sunset would be spectacular so I headed to Pu'u Kuili (a volcanic cinder cone) next to Kua Bay. A steep climb, it provides a 360 degree view of the coast and mountains from Kona to Kohala. I thought I'd have a hundred good shots but this one of Hualalai volcano and lavender clouds was the only good one of the bunch. Oh well - "The best laid plans, etc...."
